Employers have learned to be skeptical of portfolios. A GitHub repo with a model in it proves very little — it might have been copied, it might not run, and the author might not understand a single line. The defense changes that. When you have to stand in front of a panel and answer 'why did you choose this architecture,' the truth comes out fast.

The build is necessary, the defense is the credential

The supervised capstone (course 5.5) is 150 hours and 50 classes because building a real agentic-AI business solution takes that long — scoping, sprints, a mid-point review, hardening, and rehearsal. But the classes that matter most to an employer are the last ones: mock interviews, defense rehearsal, and the final defense and demo day.

• You learn to justify a technical tradeoff out loud, under time pressure.
• You learn to scope a problem so it is buildable in a fixed window.
• You learn to show a demo that works live, not a screenshot.

Anyone can build something. Fewer can defend it. The defense is what a hiring panel is actually evaluating.

It also teaches you to ship

A capstone that never reaches a demo is a common failure mode in less structured programs. The arc here forces a production-readiness pass (course 5.1) and a hardening phase so that demo day is a working system, not a slide deck. Graduates leave having shipped something real — which is the entire purpose of the program.
